How Natural Gas Pipe Sizing Works in Australia

Natural gas pipe sizing is about making sure there's enough gas volume reaching every appliance at the right operating pressure. Every gas appliance has a megajoule per hour ($MJ/h$) rating stamped on its data plate. A standard 4-burner cooktop draws around 36 MJ/h, an instantaneous hot water unit chews through 157 MJ/h, and a central ducted gas heater pulls about 30 MJ/h.

The sum of all appliance loads determines how much gas volume needs to flow through the main supply line. But volume is only half the battle — the pipe also must deliver that gas without dropping below the minimum required appliance inlet pressure. Every metre of pipe, elbow, and fitting creates friction that drops gas pressure.

The AS/NZS 5601.1 Pressure System Explained

In standard Australian residential gas setups, the gas meter regulator delivers natural gas at 1.05 kPa outlet pressure. Appliances require at least 0.75 kPa at their inlet regulators to operate properly.

Pipe Materials for Natural Gas in Australia

  • Copper (Type B / Soft Temper): The most common choice for domestic gas rough-ins. Soft temper copper for underground entry, hard drawn copper for internal runs. Standard sizes: DN15 (12.7mm ID), DN20 (18.9mm ID), DN25 (25.0mm ID), DN32 (31.7mm ID), DN40 (38.1mm ID), DN50 (50.8mm ID).
  • Galvanised Steel: Preferred for commercial kitchens, industrial plants, and multi-unit developments where mechanical protection and higher volume capacities are required.

Elbows, tees, and isolation valves add significant friction to a gas line. Rather than calculating every fitting individually on site, gasfitters add an equivalent length percentage to the straight pipe run:

  • Moderate Fittings (4-8 elbows/tees): Add 25% to straight pipe length.
